Progenics seeks out promising new products and technologies around which we build new development programs or enhance existing programs. Our in-licensing strategy has been the basis for our clinical development programs for methylnaltrexone. Our lead HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) therapeutic, PRO 140, was discovered internally and is developed clinically by Progenics.
In the area of virology, we are developing viral entry inhibitors, which are molecules designed to inhibit the virus' ability to enter certain types of immune system cells. We are also conducting research on a novel prophylactic HIV vaccine. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).
In addition, we are developing immunotherapies for prostate cancer, including monoclonal antibodies directed against prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein found on the surface of prostate cancer cells. We are also developing vaccines designed to stimulate an immune response to PSMA.
